The South Staffordshire College group approached us to help facilitate their automotive department and create electric vehicle and hybrid vehicle resources for their automotive department.
Focus XR partnered with the UK’s leading electric vehicle training organisation, MIRA Technology Institute (MTI), the country’s foremost institute for EV technology. We filmed in 360 environments and produced courses in electric vehicle and hybrid health and safety, battery safety, electric vehicle and hybrid component paths on orientation, electric vehicle and hybrid drive train functions, and an introduction to hydrogen fuel cells. These courses are further enhanced with Augmented Reality (AR), where the 360 environment has graphics and 3D models overlaying the video to highlight and detail learning points.
The college group and their students benefit from rich course content directly sourced from top-level learning and research development facility, MTI, their trainers and resources, which are brought together and can be accessed by students in an immersive way.
Supporting FE colleges and Training organisations:
Facilitating student visits to premises such as MTI is challenging and expensive. To deliver the required learning, multiple site visits would be necessary. Bringing the MTI teaching directly to the student, they can visit this amazing facility in 360 with full audio but in their environment, at home, in the classroom or in any remote location.
Education and government grants, such as the Strategic Development Fund (SDF), were used to help fund and help create course material and resources. Coupled with this, Focus XR’s technology and platform is a low-cost solution that can be used as a low barrier to entry where colleges can take on this filming themselves and add to their resource.
South Staffordshire College group has a bank of state-of-the-art resources and content they can deliver anywhere within the college or engage students remotely. They can use it as part of the teaching mix or create a series of assessed modules that students can take as part of a certified course. It can be used for many years to come saving costs.
Benefits for students:
The FocusXR app allows students to view content in the comfort of their homes or classrooms. They can easily re-watch footage to bed in their knowledge too. The graphics and augmented reality tools mean they can see the learning points in much greater detail or dangerous situations than in a live environment. Camera angles from above and in tight spaces such as fuel cells and under vehicles means the student can see first-hand what the trainer is referring to.

Giving colleges and students resources that can be delivered within the college or at home means its delivery is flexible and meets the demands of the busy student. Assessments, course attendance and certification can be integrated to keep engagement levels high and allow colleges to track a student’s progress.
